TORONTO – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has addressed the charges laid in connection with the murder of B.C. Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Speaking at a Sikh Foundation of Canada gala at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Trudeau emphasized the fundamental right of Canadians to live safely, without discrimination or threats of violence.
The murder of Nijjar, who was shot last June in Surrey, sparked widespread protests and rallies against Indian diplomats by local communities. Three Indian nationals have been charged in connection with the 2023 killing, leading to strained relations between Ottawa and India.
Authorities are also investigating allegations of possible involvement by the Indian government, as previously raised by Trudeau in the House of Commons. Amidst these developments, Trudeau urged for calm and unwavering commitment to democratic principles and the justice system during the gala event.
