Peel Regional Police have apprehended Archit Grover, a 36-year-old resident of Brampton, in connection with the notorious gold heist at Toronto Pearson airport, marking the largest such theft in Canadian history.
Grover’s arrest occurred upon his arrival from India on Monday, as reported by Peel police in a news release on Thursday. This development follows a previous announcement by Peel police, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ Philadelphia Field Division, regarding five arrests made on April 17.
The recent arrest brings the total number of apprehensions in the case to six, with two individuals still evading capture. Grover faces charges of theft over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense. Additionally, he is under indictment in the United States for firearm-related offenses, according to police statements.
Peel police have urged the remaining individuals linked to the heist to seek legal counsel and surrender to authorities.
The high-profile heist, which occurred in April 2023, involved the theft of 6,600 gold bars valued at over $20 million, alongside $2.5 million in cash, from Toronto Pearson airport. In recent developments, thirty-seven search warrants were executed, leading to the seizure of $430,000 in Canadian currency.
Among the items confiscated during the search were six gold bracelets resembling bangles, suspected to be pure gold with a collective value exceeding $89,000. Authorities also seized smelting equipment, casts, and molds associated with the illegal gold trade.
Nine individuals have been identified in connection with the heist, with arrests, charges, or Canada-wide warrants issued against them. Notable among those charged are Parmpal Sidhu, a 54-year-old Air Canada employee, and Ali Raza, a 37-year-old Toronto resident and jewelry store owner.
Additionally, arrest warrants have been issued for Simran Preet Panesar, a former Air Canada employee from Brampton, and Arsalan Chaudhary, a 42-year-old Mississauga resident. The driver responsible for the cargo theft, identified as Durante King-Mclean from Brampton, was apprehended in the United States in possession of numerous illegal firearms.
King-Mclean currently remains in U.S. custody facing charges related to firearms trafficking.
