Tragic news struck the American cycling community as 17-year-old Magnus White, a promising young talent known as a “rising star” in the sport, passed away in a training accident in Boulder, Colorado. USA Cycling announced the heartbreaking incident on Sunday, revealing that White was preparing to represent his country in the cross-country discipline at the junior Mountain Bike World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, when he was struck by a vehicle.
In a statement, USA Cycling expressed its deepest condolences to the White family, his teammates, friends, and the Boulder community, acknowledging the immense difficulty they must be facing during this devastating time. They emphasized that they ride in honor of Magnus.
White was an adept off-road cyclist and had previously competed for the US team at the Cyclocross World Championships in both 2022 and 2023. He began racing at the national level at the tender age of 10, showcasing his immense talent from a young age.
This year, he had achieved a spot in the Mountain Bike World Championships team for the first time and was slated to compete in Glasgow on August 10. USA Cycling highlighted that Magnus fell in love with cycling early in life through Boulder Junior Cycling, further emphasizing his deep passion for the sport.
Survived by his parents, Jill and Michael, and his brother, Eero, Magnus White’s untimely death has left the cycling community in shock and mourning. Family friends initiated a GoFundMe campaign in his memory, which surpassed $60,000 in donations by Monday.
While the cycling world grieves this immense loss, preparations for the inaugural UCI Cycling World Championships continue, set to take place from August 3 to August 13, hosting events in Glasgow and throughout Scotland.
