Israel initiated a new phase in its conflict with Hamas on Saturday, which involved an expansion of ground attacks. These operations were accompanied by a blackout of almost all communication within the Gaza Strip, achieved through increased bombardment and artillery fire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu framed this as a war for Israel’s survival, emphasizing the phrase “‘Never again’ is now.”
Gaza residents reported that the barrage from land, air, and sea was the most intense since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict, which had been ongoing for three weeks. Concerns were raised by other countries and aid agencies about the safety of 2.3 million Gazans who were isolated from the outside world, with international assistance hindered at the border.
According to the Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, the Palestinian death toll surpassed 7,700, with a majority being women and children. In the occupied West Bank, over 110 Palestinians lost their lives due to violence and Israeli incursions.
Israel, during a surprise incursion by Hamas militants, reported more than 1,400 casualties, including at least 310 soldiers. Additionally, at least 229 individuals were taken hostage in Gaza, with four hostages subsequently released.
