Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted a surprise military drill on Wednesday on disputed islands in the Arabian Gulf, which are also claimed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The exercise focused mainly on Abu Musa Island, with the Guard also deploying forces to the Greater Tunb Island, as reported by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency. The drill involved the participation of ships, drones, and missile units.
While Iran did not provide a specific reason for launching the drill, such impromptu exercises have occurred in the past. During the drill, the Guard’s chief, Gen. Hossein Salami, stated in a televised address that their nation seeks security and tranquility and will respond strongly to any threats or hostilities.
The timing of the military exercise coincides with the increasing US military presence in the region following ship seizures by Iran. Thousands of Marines and sailors from the USS Bataan (amphibious assault ship) and the USS Carter Hall (a landing ship) are en route to the Arabian Gulf. Additionally, the US has dispatched A-10 Thunderbolt II warplanes, F-16 and F-35 fighters, and the destroyer USS Thomas Hudner to the area.
The Pentagon explained that the deployment is in response to recent attempts by Iran to threaten the free flow of commerce in the Strait of Hormuz and its surrounding waters. This strategic waterway is crucial to global energy prices and the US’s national security.
The choice of Abu Musa and Greater Tunb islands for the drill also carries a message to the region. These islands are claimed by the UAE, even though Iran has held control since British forces withdrew in 1971. By showcasing its military strength through exercises on these disputed islands, Iran intends to remind its neighbors that they can secure the region without relying on foreign powers, particularly those allied with the US.
Moreover, Iran’s actions may be partly influenced by displeasure over recent comments made by Russia regarding the islands. Russia, which has been supplied with bomb-carrying drones by Iran for its war in Ukraine, issued a joint statement with the Gulf Cooperation Council earlier in the summer, calling for bilateral negotiations or the International Court of Justice to determine control of the islands. This statement prompted outrage in Iran, leading to the summoning of the Russian envoy by Tehran.
As tensions escalate in the region due to these military maneuvers, the international community keeps a close eye on developments amid concerns about regional stability and the implications for global energy security.
