A gunman targeted the prominent Shah Cheragh shrine in southern Iran, resulting in at least four individuals being wounded during the attack. The incident occurred in Shiraz, which is approximately 675 kilometers (420 miles) south of Iran’s capital, Tehran. The shrine is among Iran’s top five Shiite shrines and serves as a significant religious site, attracting pilgrims.
Details about the attack were initially unclear, with varying reports from different news sources. The state-run IRNA news agency reported that four individuals were wounded, including two shrine workers and two pilgrims.
According to the governor of Fars province, where the shrine is located, the attack was carried out by a lone gunman who was subsequently detained by security forces. No motive for the attack was provided in the brief statement made by Mohammad Hadi Imanieh.
This incident follows a previous attack on the same shrine in October 2022, during which 13 people were killed, and numerous others were wounded. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for that assault. The attacker was reported to be a man from Tajikistan, who later died in a hospital due to injuries sustained while being detained by security forces.
