Abu Dhabi authorities have initiated an investigation into a distressing incident where over 100 cats, many of them deceased, were discovered in the desert near the UAE capital. This “inhumane act” has prompted outrage from animal rescuers and concerned citizens.
The felines were found in the al-Falah area, near the Falcon Hospital in Abu Dhabi. Tragically, 60 cats were found deceased, while 84 others were rescued, although many were suffering from dehydration and malnutrition. Rescuers are currently working to find new homes for the surviving cats.
Nearly all of the cats had been microchipped and neutered as part of trap, neuter, release programs. Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) confirmed that they have launched an investigation into the incident. In a statement, the DMT expressed their commitment to animal welfare and stated that they are actively working to identify the individuals responsible for this cruel act.
Tadweer, the government department responsible for pest control, typically manages stray cats and takes them to the Falcon Hospital for examination and neutering. However, the large number of cats found in this incident has raised concerns that they were dumped en masse by pest controllers.
Animal rescuers and volunteers have been deeply affected by this tragic discovery, with many describing the scene as a “massacre.” The DMT has encouraged the public to report any cases of animal abuse or neglect by contacting 800 555.
