A professor from a Virginia university, reported missing while attending a conference in Orlando, Florida, has been discovered deceased.
David Hanbury’s death was confirmed by Averett University, a private Baptist institution in Danville, Virginia, on Sunday via Facebook. The university conveyed receiving the news of his passing from his family that afternoon.
The university’s statement expressed profound sadness: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking update of the passing of Dr. David Hanbury. On behalf of the entire Averett community, we send our condolences and prayers of support to Dr. Hanbury’s family, friends, and all others upon whom he had a lasting impact.”
Orlando Police Department responded to an unattended death call at 450 East Compton Street on Saturday, March 16. The body found at the scene, identified as Hanbury, was situated within a men’s club named Club Orlando.
While the cause of Hanbury’s death remains undetermined, Orlando Police stated it does not appear suspicious at present. The investigation into his death is active and ongoing.
Hanbury, attending the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference in Orlando, was last seen on the evening of Friday, March 15, according to the university.
Averett University’s statement highlighted Hanbury’s significant role within the institution. He had been a faculty member for over eight years, serving as an associate professor and co-chair of the psychology department, as well as the chair for the division of physical and psychological health sciences.
University President Dr. Tiffany M. Franks extended an invitation to the campus and surrounding community to gather for a time of prayer and support on Monday.
