US government officials are set to attend a Ukraine peace summit in Saudi Arabia, according to State Department spokesman Matthew Miller during a briefing on Monday. While Miller did not provide further details, The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Saudi Arabia would invite Western states, Ukraine, and major developing countries to participate in the talks.
The peace summit is scheduled to take place in Jeddah on August 5 and 6, with approximately 30 countries expected to attend. Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential office, confirmed on Sunday that Saudi Arabia would host the talks, focusing on the situation in Ukraine and discussing a peace plan.
In a Twitter post, Yermak stated, “We are preparing the next meeting of national security advisers regarding the implementation of the Ukraine Peace Formula, which will soon take place in Saudi Arabia.” He likened the upcoming meeting to the talks that occurred in June in Copenhagen. Further details about the agenda and participants in the Saudi-hosted peace summit are yet to be disclosed.
