The State Department announced on Wednesday that US officials will embark on a trip to Doha and Astana this week to hold discussions with Taliban representatives and “technocratic professionals” from key Afghan ministries. The visit, scheduled from July 26 to July 31, will see Special Representative for Afghanistan, Thomas West, and Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights, Rina Amiri, engage in crucial talks.
During the meetings, the focus will be on several critical interests in Afghanistan. Among the topics on the agenda are humanitarian support for the Afghan people, economic stabilization, and the fair and dignified treatment of all Afghans, with special attention to women and girls’ rights. Security matters will also be addressed, along with efforts to combat narcotics production and trafficking, a pressing concern for the region.
Additionally, West and Amiri will take the opportunity to meet with members of civil society actively involved in promoting women’s economic empowerment in Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. The engagement with these individuals seeks to strengthen efforts in empowering women in various areas of society.
This trip marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to address complex issues in Afghanistan, with the involvement of key US officials and discussions with the Taliban and other relevant stakeholders. The outcome of these talks will be closely watched as the international community seeks to ensure progress and stability in the region.
