Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced plans to hold a meeting to address the ongoing wildfire crisis in the Northwest Territories (N.W.T.), following the mass evacuation of regions including the capital city of Yellowknife.
The exact time of the meeting by the Incident Response Group has not been disclosed.
In recent days, Trudeau engaged in a conversation with Northwest Territories Premier Caroline Cochrane to discuss the state of emergency declared in the territory, as well as the evacuation orders affecting areas such as Fort Smith, Enterprise, Jean Marie River, Hay River, K’atl’odeeche First Nation, and their surroundings, alongside Yellowknife.
Reports from the Canadian government indicate that over 230 wildfires are currently active in the Northwest Territories, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes. The fires have consumed an estimated area of up to 20,000 square kilometers.
Shane Thompson, N.W.T. Municipal and Community Affairs Minister, detailed the evacuation procedures for residents fleeing the fires. Those departing by air are requested to gather at Sir John Franklin High School in Yellowknife. Thompson emphasized that registration will prioritize those needing immediate flights.
For individuals departing by road, Thompson acknowledged potential delays due to smoky conditions on Highway 3. Despite current favorable conditions on the highway, he noted the availability of pilot cars to guide people through challenging circumstances.
Thompson emphasized that the fire is approximately 17 kilometers away from Yellowknife and about four kilometers from Fort Smith. As the territory faces what is described as the worst fire season on record, officials are maintaining close contact with impacted residents, providing guidance and assistance.
Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty also urged residents to be prepared for evacuation and to pack essentials promptly. The situation is evolving, and the territory’s government is actively providing updates and resources for affected individuals.
