Montreal police have determined that the collision between a tanker truck and a cyclist, which resulted in the cyclist’s death, was an accident. The spokesperson for the Montreal police, Sabrina Gauthier, announced on Wednesday that no charges will be filed against the 53-year-old truck driver involved in the incident. The collision occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the truck driver was traveling on Papineau Avenue towards the Jacques Cartier Bridge. Witnesses reported that the 43-year-old cyclist fell off his bicycle and was subsequently struck by the truck. Tragically, the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the collision, the truck initially left the scene, leading authorities to consider the possibility of a hit-and-run. However, the truck was later located, and the driver was interviewed by the police on Tuesday night.
In light of this incident, cycling advocates are urging caution for cyclists on Montreal roads, especially when sharing the road with large vehicles. Magali Brebonne, a spokesperson for Vélo Québec, emphasized the importance of avoiding overtaking trucks, remaining mindful of blind spots, and keeping a safe distance from these vehicles to ensure personal safety.
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder for both drivers and cyclists to exercise vigilance and respect for one another on the road to prevent accidents and protect lives.
