The Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 Nations, representing First Nations in Western Canada, has announced a state of emergency due to the escalating number of opioid-related deaths. Urgent action and financial assistance from all levels of government are being sought to address this crisis.
Grand Chief Leonard Standingontheroad emphasized the need for the federal government to intervene and provide more effective, flexible, and sustainable support. According to the confederacy, the medicine chest clause outlined in the treaty places an ongoing obligation on the federal government to ensure the provision of healthcare services.
The confederacy’s statement also highlights the expectation for all levels of government to honor and respect their treaty responsibilities. Additionally, meaningful consultation, collaboration, and funding commitments are being demanded to establish culturally appropriate healthcare services. This includes crucial provisions such as mental health support, addiction treatment programs, and harm reduction initiatives.
