Steve Harwell, the former lead singer of the rock group Smash Mouth, passed away at the age of 56, according to his manager Robert Hayes. Although the cause of death has not been disclosed, it was revealed that Harwell had been receiving hospice care over the weekend. He died at his home in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by family and friends.
Hayes shared a heartfelt tribute to Harwell, describing him as a “true American Original” and highlighting his unwavering determination to achieve pop stardom despite limited musical experience. He praised Harwell’s charisma, ambition, and courage.
Steve Harwell was a founding member and the longtime lead singer of Smash Mouth, a band known for its hit singles “All Star” and “I’m a Believer.” The group earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group for “All Star” and gained cult status when the song was featured on the soundtrack of the animated film “Shrek” in 2001.
In an interview with Vice in 2014, Harwell expressed his enthusiasm for performing the band’s iconic songs and noted that there was always someone in the crowd who hadn’t heard them live. He emphasized the importance of such songs in sustaining his career.
Harwell was known for his unconventional approach to promoting the band’s music, including personally taking their album “Astro Lounge” to radio stations across the country.
Since Harwell’s departure from the band in 2021 due to health issues, Smash Mouth continued to perform with new lead vocalist Zach Goode.
Hayes concluded his tribute by acknowledging Harwell’s vibrant and intense life, stating that he burned brightly across the universe before peacefully passing away, aiming for the stars and hitting his target.
