Bomb disposal experts in Singapore have successfully neutralized a 100-kilogram Second World War aerial bomb, ensuring the safety of the city-state’s residents. This significant operation required the evacuation of over 4,000 people living in the vicinity.
In a video shared by the Singapore Army, the explosive device was seen being safely detonated at a construction site, resulting in a powerful explosion. This bomb is believed to be one of the largest wartime explosives ever discovered in Singapore.
The relic of war had been unearthed just a week prior and was deemed too hazardous to transport, necessitating on-site disposal by the military, as per police instructions.
Following the controlled detonation, authorities confirmed that nearby buildings and roads remained structurally sound, and residents were permitted to return to their homes.
The origin of the bomb was not disclosed by Singaporean authorities. However, it’s worth noting that another 100-kilogram Second World War bomb was discovered and safely disposed of in 2016, though no evacuations were required at that time, according to local newspaper The Straits Times.
During the Second World War, Singapore was occupied by Japanese forces from 1942 to 1945, making it a significant historical location in the region. Discoveries like these serve as reminders of the wartime history that shaped the city-state.
