A Saskatoon psychiatrist is facing charges from the police after allegedly billing a government agency for fraudulent services, amounting to over $90,000.
The investigation into the 65-year-old psychiatrist began in February 2022 when the College of Physicians and Surgeons reported the fraudulent actions in connection with medical billings to the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS).
Upon investigation by the Economic Crime Section, it was discovered that the government agency had been defrauded of more than $90,000. The fraudulent billings were made between September 2017 and December 2018.
In response to the charges, the psychiatrist voluntarily turned himself into the police on Tuesday, as stated in an SPS news release. He now faces charges of fraud over $5,000 and has been released on certain conditions pending further legal proceedings.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons, which regulates doctors in the province, is conducting a separate investigation into the professional conduct of the psychiatrist. The college’s legal counsel confirmed that the matter is under active investigation, and any findings of unprofessional conduct will be made public.
The psychiatrist is scheduled to appear in court on August 28 to face the charges brought against him by the police.
