KYIV, UKRAINE – In a tragic incident, Russian ballistic missiles targeted an apartment complex and a university building in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown, causing the deaths of six people and leaving 75 others wounded. The missiles struck the city, resulting in extensive damage to the apartment building and the university.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that one of the missiles hit the apartment building between the fourth and ninth floors, leading to significant destruction. Black smoke billowed from the affected units, and vehicles were damaged on the streets nearby.
The casualties included a 10-year-old girl and her mother, as mentioned by President Zelenskyy. Over 350 people participated in the rescue operation to help those trapped under the rubble.
This attack took place a day after President Zelenskyy hinted at possible attacks inside Russia, stating that the war is gradually returning to Russia’s symbolic centers and military bases. However, it is unclear if the missile strikes were in retaliation for his comments.
In response to the conflict, both Russia and Ukraine have engaged in military actions, and the war has escalated to involve missile strikes, artillery, and drone attacks. Amidst the ongoing hostilities, concerns about civilian casualties and infrastructural damage continue to rise, with reports of attacks on populated areas and civilian objects.
The situation has drawn international attention, and various countries have taken measures in response to the conflict. China recently introduced restrictions on the export of long-range civilian drones, citing concerns about their potential misuse for military purposes in the war.
In the midst of the conflict, Russian mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin announced that his Wagner Group is not currently recruiting fighters, as there is currently “no shortage of personnel.” Prigozhin previously agreed with Western estimates of significant losses in the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.
As the conflict persists, the global community remains concerned about the safety and humanitarian impact on civilians in the conflict zones. Calls for a peaceful resolution to the war continue, with efforts to find a diplomatic solution and de-escalate tensions.
