According to a statement from Russia’s defense ministry on Tuesday, their forces have made significant progress in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, advancing up to two kilometers (1.2 miles) along a section of the front.
The statement mentioned that the total advance of their units amounted to two kilometers in depth and covered up to four kilometers of the front, heading towards Lyman. Additionally, the Russian army claimed successful counteractions and the takeover of the village of Sergiivka.
This new assault by Russia occurred on a northeastern stretch of the crescent-shaped frontline, following Ukraine’s own attacks further south, which began in early June.
Notably, on July 11, Moscow had already asserted that they advanced 1.5 kilometers closer to Lyman, a rail hub that Ukraine had reclaimed in October.
It appears that Russia’s strategy is to push the Ukrainians to abandon their advances in cities like Bakhmut and shift their troops to defend the Lyman front. The situation remains tense and continues to be a cause of concern for regional stability.
