Poland has made another significant arrest in the ongoing investigation of a Russian spy network, bringing the total number of individuals detained to 15, according to Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski on Monday.
As a crucial hub for Western military supplies to Ukraine, Poland has increasingly become a target of Russian espionage, with accusations that Moscow is actively working to destabilize the country. Minister Kaminski announced on Twitter that the Internal Security Agency has apprehended another member of the spy network, who was involved in surveilling military facilities and seaports. It was revealed that the suspect had been receiving regular payments from Russian intelligence.
The Russian embassy in Warsaw has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the recent developments.
This follows the detention of a Russian professional ice hockey player in June on spying charges. Additionally, in March, Poland announced the dismantling of a Russian espionage network, resulting in the arrest of nine individuals who were allegedly involved in planning acts of sabotage and monitoring rail routes leading to Ukraine.
To address concerns about Russian espionage, Poland implemented a 200-meter exclusion zone around its Swinoujscie Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in April. These security measures highlight the country’s commitment to protecting its critical infrastructure from potential threats.
