The Pentagon announced on Thursday that it will deploy new US military assets to the Middle East in response to recent attempts by Iran to seize commercial tankers in the region. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin ordered the deployment of an Amphibious Readiness Group/Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) into the region, in addition to dispatching F-35s, F-16s, and a guided missile destroyer, the USS Thomas Hudner (DDG-116).
The deployment of the Amphibious Readiness Group/Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) provides additional aviation, maritime assets, and US Marines, enhancing flexibility and maritime capability in the region, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM chief Gen. Erik Kurilla emphasized the US commitment to defending freedom of navigation in the Middle East. He stated that the additional forces, along with the cooperation of partner nations in the region, will help safeguard the free flow of international commerce, uphold the rules-based international order, and deter Iranian destabilizing activities.
The Pentagon underscored its collaboration with like-minded partners who share a commitment to the free flow of commerce. Coordinated actions will be taken against threats to the rules-based international order, sending a strong message against any attempts to disrupt the stability and security of the region.
