A tragic incident has unfolded in Montreal as a 56-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter were found dead in what authorities are deeming a double homicide. The grim discovery occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning at their home in the Lachine borough of southwest Montreal.
The Montreal police (SPVM) were alerted to the situation by concerned relatives who reported multiple missing individuals around 12:15 a.m. Following the tip, officers arrived at a residence on Terrasse J.-S.-Aimé-Ashby, near Renaissance Park, where they uncovered the lifeless bodies of the mother and daughter.
SPVM spokesperson Mariane Allaire Morin confirmed the tragic news, stating, “Unfortunately, their death was pronounced on site. She’s 56 years old and a little girl at 12 years old.”
Forensic investigators are currently working to establish the precise time of their deaths. Police have indicated that they have at least one suspect in connection with the double homicide and are also searching for a crucial witness.
The family vehicle was discovered in a parking lot on du Musée Street, close to the Lachine Canal, approximately a 10-minute drive from the victims’ home. However, it remains unclear how the vehicle ended up there. Authorities are conducting investigations on the vehicle and seeking surveillance footage and witnesses to shed light on the circumstances.
The community has been deeply shaken by the tragic incident, as the neighborhood is typically peaceful and family-friendly. Longtime residents expressed their shock and sadness, emphasizing that such violence is unprecedented in the area.
These deaths bring the total number of homicides on the Island of Montreal to 18 in 2023, marking a particularly violent week with four homicides occurring within days. The authorities are diligently working to gather evidence and information to bring those responsible for this terrible act to justice.
