Tragically, the baggage worker who suffered serious injuries at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) on Saturday has succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by airport officials.
In a press release issued on Sunday, Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) stated that the employee worked for Equans, an international technical services company. The entire YUL airport community expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the worker’s family, loved ones, and colleagues, said ADM CEO Philippe Rainville.
According to a spokesperson from the CNESST (Quebec’s workplace safety board), the worker was involved in attempting to unlock a suitcase within a piece of equipment, potentially a suitcase conveyor, when he tragically fell. Two CNESST inspectors were dispatched to the airport to gather information about the accident and interview possible witnesses, mentioned spokesperson Antoine Leclerc-Loiselle.
It is yet to be determined whether the airport’s jurisdiction falls under provincial or federal authority. If it falls under federal jurisdiction, the investigation will be led by the Transport Safety Board of Canada instead of CNESST.
ADM has pledged its full cooperation with the authorities to ensure a smooth investigation process. The airport is also providing support to its employees during this difficult time. The release emphasized that ADM has been actively working with partners to arrange the presence of assistance and support resources for the personnel who witnessed the tragic accident. The YUL airport community can expect ongoing support from ADM in the wake of this devastating incident.
