Nelson Matus, a Mexican journalist and director of the local news site Lo Real de Guerrero, was killed on Saturday in the coastal resort city of Acapulco, according to local media reports.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when Matus was shot inside his car at a store parking lot in the neighborhood of Emiliano Zapata in northern Acapulco, as reported by Mexican newspaper El Universal. Reforma, another Mexican newspaper, added that Matus had previously survived two assassination attempts in 2017 and 2019, as noted by local media.
This tragic event follows the recent discovery of the body of Luis Martin Sanchez, a journalist for Mexican newspaper La Jornada, who had gone missing in the state of Nayarit.
The Guerrero state attorney general’s office has not yet commented on the incident.
In Mexico, journalists who investigate corruption, crime, and drug cartels often face high risks. The country has been regarded as the deadliest in the world for journalists, according to media watchdog Reporters Without Borders.
