Despite the absence of diplomatic relations between Israel and Libya, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush held a meeting in Italy last week. The meeting was facilitated by Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani.
During the meeting, Cohen highlighted the potential for cooperation between the two nations and emphasized the importance of preserving the heritage of Libyan Jewry. This preservation includes the renovation of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries in Libya.
The ministers also discussed historical ties between their countries and explored opportunities for cooperation in various areas, including humanitarian issues, agriculture, and water management.
This unexpected meeting marks a rare diplomatic interaction between Israel and Libya and could be a significant step towards increased cooperation between the two nations in the future.
