The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has taken decisive action in response to employees found to have “inappropriately claimed the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)” during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in the termination of 120 individuals.
This development follows CRA’s initial report in June, where it announced the dismissal of 20 employees who were found to have improperly received CERB funds. In addition to these terminations, the agency had initiated investigations into an additional 600 cases. In a recent update, CRA confirmed the completion of a thorough case-by-case review, which led to the termination of 120 employees.
In a statement, the CRA emphasized its unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity of Canada’s tax and benefit systems. They are dedicated to demonstrating to Canadians that the CRA operates as a trustworthy and equitable organization. The agency has reiterated its stance that any form of wrongdoing is treated with utmost seriousness, and it will take the necessary actions to address and rectify such misconduct when identified.
It’s worth noting that the CRA employs approximately 60,000 individuals across the country, making it a significant government agency responsible for overseeing tax and benefit programs in Canada.
