According to a new book, Bruce Willis had a harrowing incident that almost cost him his life on the first day of filming the iconic movie ‘Die Hard’ in 1988.
The book, titled ‘The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood’s Kings of Carnage’ by author Nick de Semlyen, delves into the behind-the-scenes stories of Hollywood. It reveals that while several action stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, and Richard Gere turned down the role of NYPD detective John McClane in ‘Die Hard,’ Willis eventually took on the part after demanding a significant paycheck of $5 million.
However, the first day of filming didn’t go smoothly for Willis. The book details that an explosion scene, considered the most dangerous shot, was scheduled early in production as a precautionary measure in case a replacement actor was needed. It was during this scene that Willis reportedly had a near-death experience.
Aside from the near-death incident, tension between Willis and director John McTiernan also arose. According to the book, Willis had a general mistrust of people in the movie industry. During the first week of shooting, their differences escalated when Willis refused to follow McTiernan’s direction for an action sequence. The book later reveals that Willis’ resistance stemmed from his concern about his thinning hair being captured by the camera.
To address Willis’ concerns, McTiernan assured him that their job was to make him look good.
