A mother and daughter from the Chicago area who were visiting relatives in the region have been reported missing, according to a family member who spoke with CNN.
The US citizens, identified as Judith Tai Raanan and her daughter Natali Raanan, had been in Israel visiting relatives in Nahal Oz, a kibbutz that came under attack by militants from Gaza on Saturday. The family has confirmed that they are in contact with the US Embassy regarding the situation.
Judith Raanan’s brother, Adi Leviatan, expressed deep concern, fearing that the pair may have been taken hostage, as he has not received any communication from them since the weekend. Natali and Judith Raanan had arrived in Israel on September 2, according to Leviatan.
Nahal Oz is situated in southern Israel, located approximately 1.5 miles from the Gaza border. In the midst of the ongoing conflict, dozens of Gaza fighters reportedly took control of a military base near Nahal Oz. An Israel Defense Forces spokesperson confirmed to CNN that there had been fighting in the vicinity of Nahal Oz on Sunday.
The disappearance of Judith Tai Raanan and Natali Raanan adds to the growing concern and complexity of the situation in the region, as efforts continue to account for and ensure the safety of individuals affected by the recent hostilities. The family and authorities are actively working to determine the whereabouts and well-being of the missing mother and daughter.
