Starting in 2024, Canadians planning to travel to certain European countries will be required to obtain a permit before their trip. The new regulation applies to 30 countries, including popular destinations such as France, Switzerland, Spain, and Greece.
To secure the permit, Canadian travellers will need to apply through the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) website or mobile app. The cost of the permit is 7 euros, approximately $10.25 in Canadian dollars. Once obtained, the permit allows travellers to stay in the designated countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The permit will be valid for three years or until the passport used in the application expires.
It is essential to note that this change also affects citizens from nearly 60 other countries, including the United States, Mexico, United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan. However, certain exemptions exist, and travellers younger than 18 or older than 70 years are exempt from payment. Additionally, family members of EU citizens or non-EU nationals who can freely move within the European Union are also exempt from the requirement.
The European Union advises potential visitors to apply for authorization well in advance of their planned travel and before making any flight or hotel reservations.
Currently, Canadian travellers can visit most of Europe without needing a visa; a valid passport is sufficient for short stays. However, with the implementation of the ETIAS requirement, travellers will need to plan ahead and obtain the necessary permit before their journey.
The European countries covered by the ETIAS include Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Portugal, Romania, and Slovenia, among others. Travellers intending to visit any of these countries should be aware of the new requirement and make the necessary arrangements to secure their travel permit for a smooth and hassle-free trip.
